Green lights are produced when the sun's particles hit the Earth's atmosphere in altitudes of 100-300 km.
Red auroras are more uncommon and associated with intense solar activity.
Seeing blue or purple auroras is very rare.
Unique places for northern lights spotting

A fell ("tunturi") in Lapland, with little to no tall trees, is a great place to have unobstructed views of the northern lights. Make sure to dress warmly!
