Alvar Aalto destinations in Helsinki and Lakeland

Explore some of the architectural gems created by world-renowned Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto, throughout the country’s Helsinki and Lakeland regions.

Finlandia Hall is a masterpiece by famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. It was designed in 1962 and built between 1967-71.

Otaniemi-Keilaniemi is an area where technology, innovation, and business meet iconic architecture and scenic nature. Keilaniemi business centre and the Aalto University campus area, which is also known for its Aalto architecture, showcase the urbanity of Espoo.

Tapiola is one of Finland's 27 national landscapes and is full of culture, architecture and shopping. 

The impressive tower of the Church of the Cross, built in 1978, rises from the old Kolkanmäki church site. This vital element of the Lahti cityscape is the creation of Alvar Aalto and elegantly mirrors the City Hall – located across the market square – designed by Eliel Saarinen, another master architect.

You could call the Lakeland region the capital of Alvar Aalto's architecture. Explore the world’s most representative cross-section of Aalto-designed buildings, starting from with examples of Classicism, then with Functionalism and continuing through the white marble and red brick periods.

Säynätsalo Town Hall occupies a unique position in the history of modern architecture and is one of Aalto’s most significant works. During this tour, you’ll hear fascinating stories and facts about Aalto's life and architecture and learn about the history of Säynätsalo.

Sauna meets design – the Finnish way

Löyly is one of the most iconic and well-known public saunas in Finland. An urban sanctuary situated on the Helsinki waterfront, its sculptural wooden building houses three wood-heated saunas and was designed by architects Ville Hara and Anu Puustinen of Avanto. There’s also an outdoor swimming pool that’s available year-round and a welcoming restaurant that serves Finnish classics.

Melding sauna tradition with urban vibes, Kuuma is a welcome addition to Tampere’s sauna scene. This sleek lakeside building features two saunas and a popular restaurant serving seasonal, Nordic-style cuisine and a delicious tasting menu.

The Finnish word “saana” means “sauna” when pronounced in the Savonian dialect. Situated on the shores of Lake Kallavesi in Kuopio, Saana is a fairly recent addition to the country’s public sauna scene and features three separate saunas, an indoor hot tub, waterfall showers, two outdoor swimming pools, and the opportunity to try open-water swimming year-round.

Sámi Museum Siida stores, researches and showcases Finland’s Sámi culture. Siida's Open-Air Museum has much to view. The museum area’s trail is approximately 800-metres-long and in the shape of a reindeer herder’s lasso. Along the trail visitors can view around 50 buildings and structures, which are grouped by their cultural area and their intended use.

The beautifully rugged wilderness lake of Inari, or Inarijärvi in Finnish, is the third largest and the second deepest lake in Finland. During the summer season that kicks off in June, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy Lake Inari via a boat cruise – also under the Midnight Sun!

Take a guided bike tour to explore Saariselkä on bike. Start the day with your local guide, who will introduce you the secrets of fatbiking. After riding for a while, the guide will give you the best tips to explore the beautiful nature by yourself. Around Saariselkä many rideable trails await you in some of Finland’s most majestic landscapes.

Gold prospectors have been searching for gold in Lapland for 150 years and near Saariselkä in Tankavaara Gold Village, this unique culture is still continued by teaching the secrets of gold panning to visitors every summer. If you find any gold, it's yours to keep!

The Lampivaara Amethyst Mine is a fascinating travel destination all year round. During the guided tour you will learn about the geology that created amethysts, their properties, and the history of the mine. After the tour, each visitor will be able to try their hand at digging for their own personal lucky amethyst!

Reindeer yoga combines the benefits of northern nature, the soothing presence of reindeer, and yoga techniques to balance the body and mind. You will learn a lot about reindeer and living in the north during reindeer yoga.
