Travelling to Finland during the Covid-19 pandemic

This page contains practical travel information for international leisure travellers planning a visit to Finland during the coronavirus pandemic.

Please note: Due to the spread of the coronavirus variant travel restrictions can change rapidly. For official information please refer to the Finnish Border Guard and the Finnish institute for health and welfare.

As of 1st of February 2022 there are no entry restrictions on internal border traffic within the EU or Schengen area. However, all passengers (born in 2006 or earlier) arriving in Finland have to go through health security measures. Health security measures may include checking certificates or COVID-19 tests. No COVID-19 tests are required at any point if you can present:

• a certificate of having received complete and valid COVID-19 vaccination series at least 7 days prior to entry. Please refer to the Finnish institute for health and welfare for the approved vaccines. Please note: A certificate of a full series of vaccinations is valid for 9 months (270 days). After this, a booster shot is required. After the booster shot, the certificate is valid until further notice. OR
   
• a single certificate that the person has recovered from COVID-19 virus and has gotten one dose of vaccine. It is equated to a complete COVID-19 vaccination series. Please note: A certificate is valid for 9 months (270 days) after vaccination. After this, a booster shot is required. After the booster shot, the certificate is valid until further notice. OR
   
• EU digital COVID certificate that proves the person has recovered from COVID-19 within 6 months.

If you don’t have any of the certificates listed above you must have a certificate of a negative COVID-19 test result of less than 72 hours OR a certificate of having received the first dose in the COVID-19 vaccination series OR you must have a COVID-19 test at the point of entry. In addition you must have a second COVID-19 test within 3 to 5 days of arriving in Finland.

Restrictions on external border traffic will continue until 8th of May 2022. Person may be granted entry into Finland from any country if they present:

• a certificate of having received complete and valid COVID-19 vaccination series at least 7 days prior to entry. Please refer to the Finnish institute for health and welfare for the approved vaccines. Please note: A certificate of a full series of vaccinations is valid for 9 months (270 days). • EU digital COVID certificate that proves the person has recovered from COVID-19 within 6 months. The COVID certificate can be issued from countries which have joined the EU Digital COVID Certificate system. Please find the country list from here.
• All the above-mentioned requirements apply to persons born in 2006 or earlier.

 

Travelling with minors

Persons who meet the requirements above may enter Finland accompanied by minor children. Children born 2007 or later do not have to take part in any health security measures. For more information check the current health safety guidelines on Finnish institute for health and welfare website.
 

Green list countries

There are no entry restrictions for residents of the countries and regions on the EU’s green list.  Countries on the green list mean countries with a sufficiently good epidemiological situation for which the Council of the European Union has decided to allow free travel to the EU.

As of 1st of March 2022 the restrictions on the opening and alcohol serving hours as well as restrictions on the number of customers and customer seats in restaurants have been lifted. The obligation to observe the general hygiene guidelines and to keep a safe distance will remain in force in all regions until the end of March.

General health and safety measures regarding coronavirus in Finland include avoiding physical contact, maintaining a safe distance from other people and observing good hand and respiratory hygiene. Finnish health authorities require using face masks in public transport in large cities and recommend using it in other situations where it is difficult to maintain 1-2 m distances from other people.

If you suspect that you might contracted COVID-19, use the Coronavirus symptom checker to first assess your condition, if possible. If the symptom checker advises you to contact a health care professional, call your nearest healthcare provider or the national Medical Helpline at tel. 116 117.

If your travel insurance includes medical insurance, please contact the healthcare provider mentioned in the policy for advice.

Nationwide emergency number is 112. Call the emergency number only in genuine emergency situations. In an emergency situation, you will be treated even if you do not have a municipality of residence in Finland. The medical costs can be collected from you afterwards. The emergency number can be called free of charge from any phone. No area code is needed. If you have a mobile phone subscription that is based abroad you can still call the emergency number without an area code.

Monitor statements and guidance

Travellers are asked to closely monitor statements and guidance issued by their home countries’ public authorities, health officials and embassies, in order to receive timely information on matters such as quarantine instructions upon arrival at home. Visa Validity

Please note that the police may extend the validity of a visa in the event that flight cancellations, for example, prevent the visa holder from leaving Finnish territory before their visa expires. For more info please contact the police.
